Eight years ago, we asked a simple question…

Is it safe to go back in the water?

Of course it is.

And if you live in New Smyrna Beach, you probably already know that.

Every summer, Discovery’s Shark Week shines a spotlight on these incredible animals, and every summer, we have a little fun celebrating right along with them. Living in the Shark Bite Capital of the World gives us a unique perspective. While our town has earned plenty of headlines over the years, most locals know sharks are simply part of sharing the ocean. They aren’t villains—they’re an important part of a healthy marine ecosystem and one of the many reasons our coastline is so remarkable.

That’s why Shark Week has always been one of our favorite traditions at Flagler Tavern.

Over the years you’ve seen giant sharks hanging from our ceiling, “Hello Chum” t-shirts, Fish Bowls, shark decorations, and plenty of laughs. It’s become one of those annual traditions that reminds us summer is in full swing on Flagler Avenue.

This year, we’re adding a new chapter.

Meet the Tavern Sharks

If you’ve ever looked up while visiting the Tavern, you’ve probably noticed our two resident sharks keeping watch over the dance floor.

Our Great White.

Our Hammerhead.

They’ve been part of countless celebrations, birthdays, live music nights, first dates, reunions, and memories made at Flagler Tavern.

The funny thing is…

They’ve never had official names.

Until now.

Help Make Tavern History

This Wednesday and Thursday during Game Night, we’re inviting our guests to help officially name our resident sharks.

Wednesday: Help us choose the official name for our Hammerhead.

Thursday: Our longtime Great White—affectionately known as FIN—will finally receive his official Tavern name.

The winning names won’t just be announced during Shark Week. They’ll become part of Flagler Tavern’s story for years to come.

Who knows? Years from now you might look up at one of our sharks and smile knowing…

“I helped name that one.”

Shark Week at the Tavern

We’ve got plenty happening all week long.

🦈 Fish Bowls are back with gummy shark swimmers.

👕 Limited-edition Shark Week 2026 t-shirts arrive this week while supplies last.

🎉 Plenty of Shark Week fun, great food, cold drinks, and live entertainment all week long.

And if you’re here late Friday or Saturday night…

Keep an eye out for a special appearance from our unofficial Shark Week Ambassador of Merriment during the midnight shot pour.

More Than Just a Celebration

Shark Week has evolved over the years, and so have we.

Today’s Shark Week isn’t about creating fear—it’s about creating appreciation. Sharks have been swimming our oceans for more than 400 million years, playing a vital role in maintaining healthy marine ecosystems. The more we learn about them, the more we appreciate just how important they are.

We’re proud to celebrate Shark Week in a way that reflects that spirit—through education, conservation, community, and, of course, a little Flagler Tavern fun.
